Here is how to tell real Phoenician/Tyrian Purple from fake:

– Real Tyrian Purple is a very dark powder before being applied to cloth or other materials. It becomes purple or red after application only. If you see a photo of bright purple powder, you’re being scammed. Real Tyrian Purple looks black from a distance.

– Real Phoenician Purple shimmers in the sun, due to its unique chemical properties. It looks different in real life than in a photo, so no photo can accurately capture exactly what it will look like.

– Real Phoenician Purple can dry to one of three colors – purple, red or blackish dried blood color. The final color will be a result of the material or fabric which the dye is applied to. 10mgs of real Tyrian Purple can dry to 10 different shades depending on what it is applied to, the humidity, and the setting time. This substance is, for lack of a better word, magical, and cannot be totally controlled. If someone shows photos of their dye dried to the same color on different surfaces, it’s not the real thing.
